Smart interiors, starched napkins and
a swanky bar. You might expect that there would be pasta on
the menu. But fine Indian food in a stylish setting is what
Bayleaf sets to offer.

The seating is on two levels-
three if you count the party room tucked away above- and most
tables are window side, offering a view of the bustle around
Koramangala’s Raheja Arcade. Far nicer than the restaurants
hurled within hotels with no natural light or air. If you
are the soup type, there are shorbas to choose from – tomato
(Rs. 50), chicken (Rs. 60) and rasam (Rs. 50) described as
a delicate Indian Consommé presumably for the benefit of the
expat crowd. |
| Brave is the restaurant that can resist
putting paneer tikka on its menu. And Bayleaf doesn’t want
to break the rules either. So vegetarian starters (Rs 80)
include paneer finger, aloo tikki stuffed with minced paneer-quite
nice and not too heavy. Non- vegetarians can choose from Machi
tikka (Rs. 150), fish finger, boti kabab, mutton seek and
of course all the variations on the chicken kebab theme-reshmi
kabab, chicken tikka, chicken pudina kabab. For main courses,
there’s the ubiquitous paneer makhanwala (Rs 75) and the not
so common baigan bharta (Rs 80 plus three kinds of dal, rajma,
channa masala and more. The plain palak (Rs 75) is excellent,
with a nice, creamy texture, especially welcome for those
suffering from panner fatigue. From the non-veg curries, the
fish masala packs a ….. but it is recommended only for those
who like somewhat strong taste of dried prawns which is used
to round off the dish. This isn’t as knock-you back as blanching
(the dried shrimp paste used in far eastern cookery), but
is pretty over whelming. For those who like milder dishes
there is the prawn malai curry and the fish tikka masala. |

There is also mutton korma
(Rs. 140), kheema mutter and a homestyle chicken curry (Rs.
120) which is exactly that –uncomplicated and delicious. It
combines well with steamed rice and rotis, of which Bay leaf
has s fine selection. The masala kulcha is especially recommended
and the garlic naan is very good too. Or just go ahead and
order the bread basket (Rs. 90) which offers a choice of four
types. For dessert try the kulfi, made in-house, full of creamy
flavour and calories for a lighter option, they have a fruit
salad with fresh fruit chunks. The bar is well-stocked and
shakes up a range of vodka cocktail. Bayleaf
is also a good place to unwind over a drink and has
happy hours from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. through the week when
some brands are available at half price.
A set executive lunch
priced at Rs.150 is available Monday to Friday as also home
delivery.
